Wartime decisions

This may be hard to do honestly. Take a second to really think about it. You are, like the Franks, Jews living in Amsterdam during World War II. Do you hide out in a space similar to the Annex, or do you try to escape to a country where Jews are not persecuted? If you are captured while you are escaping, you will be killed. If you are captured while you are hiding, you will be killed. (Sorry to be so blunt, but that is the way it was.) You could also choose to stay home in Amsterdam and hope the German army does not find you. A member of your family has been "called up."

*****LATE ADDITION FROM J.Law: I should have pointed out that you will have to leave everything behind if you try to escape--dog, fish, couch, favorite chair, clothes, toys, trophies-- EVERYTHING. Yes, Greg, the bear with the pants would be too cumbersome. You could probably manage one very portable bag o' stuff.

I have to say that I would probably try to escape from Germany or Holland and go to another country. I would probably go to Switzerland or France, because I know that was where many Jews ended up going. I would be scared and very upset about leaving my home, but it would be neccessary. I would have to realize that if I didn't go, there was a very large possibility that I could be killed.

I would try to escape to a different country where Jews aren't persecuted. It would be hard to get there, but once you did, you probably wouldn't have to worry all the time about getting caught like you would if you were hiding.

For me, I would try to escape to a different country, where Jews are safe, and hiding is not my thing. I would make a lot noise and get caught soon than get caught when I try to escape.

I agree with Sarah and Jennifer because I rather die later than now. I rather be caught while I am away from my home. Even though I am locked in a home, it still means that I will live to see the next day. I would leave little clues saying that I am going to the place i am not going like Mr. Frank did and it gives me more time to live. Then I wouldn't have to worry as much in some cases.

I would rather risk it and try to escape because if you sit and wait then you will always live in fear. But if you go then you only feel fear once rather then every day for five years. which would you rather do feel super fear for 12 days escaping or feel scared for the rest of your life? I would rather take the super fear for days then years

i would try to escape to another country like England or France. i would try to get to america but it would be doubtful that I would make it, so I would go to the first to countries. The reason why is because I would not take the risk and stay in Amsterdam. I would rather go somewhere that I new I would be safe.

I would try to escape to another country.
I wouldn't be forced to make no noise, and I would die later rather than sooner.

If you were to be killed sometime this year, would you want it to be tomorrow, or December 30th?

If I escape, I would be able to be who I wanted to be, rather than locked up, and afraid every moment of my waking life.

I think that I would probably try to escape to another country. Yes this is probably more risky but I think that it is better than to be stuck in a place living in fear that there is a high chance of the green police finding you. I think that this would be the better way because if you do escape you don’t have to worry about it anymore and either way if you get caught then you will be killed but at least try to escape so you don’t have to live in fear.

I would probably try to escape because at least I would have a chance at survival rather spend unpleasant days in an attic and then a camp I could try to escape and get results faster instead of skulking.

I personally would probably attempt to escape to the countryside and go and live amongst nature. I know what plants/ parts of plants you can eat, I have built ramshackle lean-to type buildings out of various bits and pieces of plant material I had found lying around, and I would make a midnight dash with only the essentials - 1-2 hair ties, a rope, a swiss army knife, some food to get me started, cheesecloth, a bandana, flint, a mess kit*, a blanket, and maybe a few jars if I could fit them.

* A "mess kit", for those of you who are unfamiliar with the term, is a small kit that is often brought along on camping trips. The one that I have contains a cup, a spoon, fork, and knife, a plate, a bowl, a napkin (made of cloth), and a handle for the pot and pan in which all of the items fit inside. My entire mess kit is inside of a mesh bag to boot, making it easy to keep everything in one place while you're cleaning and drying it all.

We all seem to want to just get out of there, pronto, don't we? =^)

I would try to escape to a different country. I wouldn't try to hide in an annex unless the Gremans Called up a family member, and if I knew poeple who I could trust and were not jews. Then I would stay and hide if all these curcomstances came up.

Of course back then you didn't realize how long the war would be so that probably changes everybodies opinion. Back then by the time you got out the war might be over, but they never knew it would last for years.

I would probably try to escape the country, but make sure I'd plan every detail first. But if there some obsticle that was practically impossible to cross, I'd rather go into hiding. Because in some cases I'd rather go into hiding than face imminent !!doom!!

I would escape to another country because I could quickly get out of harms way and not worry. It would be more painful to hide and worry for a long time. I could continue to live my life as I would normally. I would most likely escape to Switzerland like in the Sound of Music. The Alps would be hard to pass though.

I would probably want to escape to another country because if you were hiding in an annex and someone knew you were living there, like the Franks with miep and ,Mr. Krawler, there is more of a chance of you getting caught and earlier. So if you leave for another country, you can leave quickerand then be free of the germans for the rest of your lifes.

Personally, I would want to escape. I know there would be a great chance of being found and killed, but I'd feel trapped if we were hiding. Hiding also means being dead silent, and since I would probably bring my pets, I just couldn't keep quiet :P. Also, living without fresh air for about 2 years would make me crazy.

Not unlike the most of the class, I would try to escape to a different country. Not only would I try, I would escape. If that decision was my last, between hiding and escaping, I would do anything. If a family member was "called up" I rather be able to live a normal life for at least some amount of time.

I would go to another country. My goal would probably be to go to one of the allied countries where the enemy wouldn't be able to just walk in and get you. Also, if you are found, there would most likely be an easier way to escape. For example, if you are caught in a few rooms with only one entrance/exit, you will probably not escape. BUT, if you are walking and you realize that you are in danger you can ACTUALLY hide efficiently and the chances of you getting caught would decrease greatly. Although, they could probably find you more easily because they could unleash the dogs on you and they'd be able to find that way and they could look for footprints and "camp sights".

Like, well, most of the 8th grade who apparenty likes running... (Not pointing out Jen.... Sorry Jen...) I would attempt escaping to somewhere Neutral, like Switzerland.. I think it would be a bit more logical to try and run. The Germans (Nazis) were almost everywhere and although it was tough I wouldn't want to have to shut my family up in a small space for months and years... I would want a normal life for my family. Even if it meant starting over and leaving behind your lifes treasures. I would want them to feel secure and safe. Not scared and insecure.. So I would definitely chance the running to anther country.

I would also have totally super awesome mad connections so you know, me and family would FLY there!!!! TUN-TUNNAAH!!!! Sorry! Tee-hee I couldn't resist...!

I would try to hide if there was a good place to hide. I think would think it would be much safer there.

The sad thing is that I'm already bored... It's not even the first full day of vacation yet.

I think if I was in this situation I would escape to where Jews are not persecuted. I would escape because I would not want to just sit in the "Annex" for as long as the Franks were. I would want to be active and not be stagnant like the Franks were.

I would honestly escape to another country for that feeling of safty. I would escape through a tunnel system as I explained here:
Home----------------
I I
I I
I I
I L-------------------------------
I ---> Someplace safe------>
L----------------------------------
Also if there wasn't one, I would try something like the underground railroad.

I would definately try escaping for i think that had less risk.. and you wouldnt have to wait in fear every day cause if you made it youd be free and done with it. ANd i would definately not just wait at my house because i would think if you were called up you were called up abd be taken. and then you would have to deal with watching all of your jewish friends and neighbors being carried off..And at least with escaping you wouldnt be stuck in an annex for so long doing nothing when you could at least see the sunshine before you got shot to death..
